Start-up Leadership Skills

Running a business isn’t just about having a good product and being able to sell it to your target market. It's not enough to be fully capitalized and offer a great product or service. You need strong leadership skills to succeed.

From the moment your business opens its doors, both your customers and your employees will look to you to set the tone. If you don’t 100 percent believe in your business, it will be nearly impossible to convince others to give their time and money to make your goals realized. Good leaders are prepared to do “whatever it takes” (within the legal limits, of course!) to make their business a success.

Good leaders also possess the following traits:

• A vision for where he or she wants the business to be and the ability to communicate that vision to those around him or her.

• Integrity, which attracts employees, investors and customers.

• Strong decision-making skills combined with an unwavering pursuit of his or her vision.

• The ability to stand up for what he or she believes in.

• Demonstrated accountability to customers, employees and investors, but most importantly, to themselves.

Strong leaders both enjoy success and deal with failure. Most importantly, they take responsibility for their company’s actions, and provide cohesion to their business ventures.
