Do you like the idea of running a business focused on caring for small children? Opening a daycare center will allow you to be involved in the growth and development of children while enabling you to fulfill your dream of becoming a business owner.
Quality daycare service is certainly in demand. More and more people are joining the ranks of two-income families and desperately need the services daycare provides. With no indication of this trend reversing itself, it appears that daycare will continue to be a growing opportunity.
Starting a daycare center, however, is no easy task. While there are no national regulations that apply to daycare centers, each state maintains its own strict set of licensing guidelines. Adhering to these guidelines makes opening and running a successful daycare a delicate balancing act.
Each state maintains its own classification system of daycares centers. The classification that a daycare center falls into determines the set of regulations that apply to it. Two regulations most states enforce universally are a staff to child ratio and a space to child ratio. This means that your facilities and staff must grow with your enrollment. Because enrollment size is one of the criteria used to classify daycare centers, increases in enrollment can also bring on the possibility of reclassification and further regulation.
This makes a keen knowledge of your states regulatory practices and excellent business planning vital ingredients to a successful daycare business. The National Resource Center for Heath and Safety in Child Care and Early Education is an outstanding resource for daycare centers. They have links to each state’s daycare classification system and corresponding regulations .
Starting a daycare may require a lot of planning but doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. Most states allow for the operation of daycares in private homes although with only limited enrollments. Still, if you do not have the money to invest this is an avenue to explore that will allow you to start your business and build a reputation. Work your social network, such as church members, civic organizations, friends, family, and neighbors, to advertise the business. Try offering “value-added” services such as emergency sitting, weekends, or overnight work to distinguish your business.
If you love to work with children and have been thinking of starting your own business then why not look into to opening a daycare center? It may be what you have been waiting for.
