How We Built our Work at Home Workforce
By Ellen Thompson

Even though we have an office for 4 Walls, no one except our CFO is there with any degree of frequency. This arrangement helps us maintain our low cost structure and is ideal for our current workforce. The reasons why 4 Walls can successfully operate in this way are our employees and the process by which we choose to hire them.

And everything we needed to know about hiring we learned from Disney.

The largest employer of workers at a single location is The Walt Disney Company. They employ more people in their Orlando resort than even the Pentagon (which employs the second most people in a single site). If you have been to Disney World, you know that they employ the most friendly, customer-focused individuals you’ve ever seen. How do they do this? They only hire people who are naturally inclined towards these behaviors.

At 4 Walls, we only hire people we think will be productive at home and enjoy the experience. How do we actually go about doing this? We start by writing a careful job ad that describes the position and makes it clear that we are offering a work at home job. We also express a preference for people with experience working from home. Working from home is not for everyone, and the only way you can truly know if it’s for you is to actually try it. In our experience, the majority of our most productive employees came to us with work at home experience, so it’s been an accurate predictor of success for us.

It’s not always possible to find someone who is qualified and has experience working from home, so we will also consider individuals who have a demonstrated history of working independently and express a strong preference for working from home.

For information on where we recruit our work from home workforce, be sure to read the second part of this article - Where We Advertised to Find our at Home Workforce .
