Credit Scores––An Introduction
By Julie Gerstein

A good credit score can go a long way, and will likely make the difference between being approved or denied for a credit card. Your credit score is the measure of your credit risk. Your credit score can be affected by late payments, lack of credit references or past irresponsible credit card use. Having a low credit score may not automatically disqualify you from credit card approval, but it may mean that you're given a smaller credit limit or offered a card with a higher interest rate. Conversely, a good credit score can make it easy to develop new credit or extend existing credit.

To find out your credit score, you can order a credit report. The three major credit report agencies are Trans Union, Equifax and Experian.
