Entrepreneurial Traits
Should You Take the Circus Juggler Approach to Your Business?

The "circus juggler approach" to business has proven successful to some.

A circus juggler entrepreneur operates more than one business at a time. This type of entrepreneur tends to be involved in multiple projects at different stages of development. A circus juggler entrepreneur may have some projects that are profitable, some that are in the start-up phase, others that are inactive, and finally projects that are failing.

Some entrepreneurs swear by this concept. They believe that running several businesses at once prevents you from putting all your eggs into one entrepreneurial basket and that chances are at least one or two of these businesses will be profitable.

Having other businesses can also make it psychologically easier to abandon a business idea that isn’t working out.

Other entrepreneurs think that circus jugglers have it all wrong. These entrepreneurs believe that it’s better to put all of your eggs in one entrepreneurial basket allowing you to focus all of your attention on growing a single business.

Should you be a circus juggler or focus your efforts on one business? Like many other business questions, there is no one right answer. You need to do whatever you think will maximize value for you.

After you start your first business, you may identify other opportunities. If you have the temperament and the resources to follow through, by all means take advantage of the opportunities at hand. If your gut tells you to pass, then continue focusing on the business at hand.
