This past summer, reports a recent article in Seed magazine, search engine giant Google placed billboards in Cambridge, Massachusetts’, Harvard Yard and California’s Silicon Valley. Simply, but cryptically, the billboards read, “first 10 digit prime found in consecutive digits of e.com.”

Those who solved the puzzle (www.7427466391.com) were directed to the second site with another challenging problem. Those who solved that puzzle were linked to a final site featuring a third problem. Those who cracked this problem were directed to the Google Labs website and invited to apply for work!

By posting what sounds like an impossible series of challenges to the non-math savvy among us, Google netted more than 100 resumes from Ph.D-level mathematicians and scientists. It also created more buzz for Google, garnering them positive press for both their creative recruiting practices and emphasis on intelligence.

The “big idea” behind Google’s wild scheme? Attract intelligence by using intelligence. While your business may not necessarily be looking for a gaggle of Ph.D-level thinkers, Google’s initiative proves that you can think creatively about how to find good employees––and raise the profile of your company––at the same time.
