Got Computers? You Need an Acceptable Use Policy

If your office has computers and an Internet connection, it’s a given that your employees are surfing the web. In order to protect your business and your employees, it’s important to develop an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). An AUP provides employees with guidelines for Internet and computer usage. It should explain the what type of Internet and e-mail activity is acceptable, what is inappropriate and the consequences of violating the AUP.

Your AUP should include:

• A description of what constitutes acceptable use of the Internet.

• Guidelines of what constitutes unacceptable use of the Internet.

• A code of conduct governing behavior on the Internet.

• A statement reminding users that Internet access and the use of computer networks is a privilege.

• A description of the consequences of violating the AUP.

• a signature form for employees indicating their intent to abide by the AUP.

Protect your business and your employees by letting them know in writing what's permitted and what's considered inappropriate use of your computer equipment and Internet connection.
