Update: Frequent Traveler Program Stalled

Secure Flight, a new program aimed at saving business commuters time at the airport, recently hit a bump in the road. Security concerns have stalled the program, which has so far cost more than $144 million. The program screens and registers frequent travelers, and allows them to bypass airport security stations, and was initially conceived in response to travelers’ complaints about long security wait times.

So what’s the problem? The program would require that participants submit both biographical and biometric––such as fingerprints or eye scans––information. And the Transportation Security Administration is concerned about the security of that information, and about the use of personal details to screen travelers.

The TSA is in the process of conducting a review of the system, at Congress’ behest. The program, which was pilot tested as at five airports across the county and was set to be rolled out at participating airports by June 2006, is, for now, at a standstill.
